New Research Excellence Framework released by Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Canadian RoRI Partner CIHR announced new framework embracing a more holistic and inclusive concept of research excellence

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) announced the release of their new Research Excellence Framework, a major step in advancing their strategic plan commitment to research excellence in all its diversity.

Globally, research funders are recognizing that exclusively relying on and rewarding historical notions of research excellence can limit which researchers and projects receive funding.

There is significant growing interest in Canada and internationally in what is meant by research excellence, and how it impacts the research ecosystem.  This has been made clear through calls for more responsible research assessment, a reimagining of what is considered excellent, acknowledgment that research culture can be problematic, and that current incentive structures are biased.

CIHR’s newly developed Research Excellence Framework was created with input from other funders, research institutions, researchers and knowledge users. The Framework embraces a broader, more holistic and inclusive definition of research excellence and has been launched alongside an implementation plan.
